The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has introduced the Low Carbon Ratings (LCR) – the world’s first global rating system to assess cement and concrete based on their carbon footprints. Using a clear AA to G scale, the system aims to support more sustainable material choices in construction. This system ensures transparency in low-carbon procurement and supports global efforts toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
The carbon rating system developed for cement and concrete is designed to be easily recognizable with a simple visual graphic that clearly indicates the product’s rating. This system provides consistency and comparability in the cement and concrete sector, enabling more transparent and reliable decision-making.
“Our Low Carbon Ratings system supports more sustainable procurement practices and will empower the entire value chain to accelerate decarbonisation.” said GCCA CEO Thomas Guillot.
Designed to work with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), the system can be adopted globally and adapted to local carbon accounting practices. cement and concrete ratings can be used with national and local baselines and targets to support low carbon procurement.
