Holcim and ELEMENTAL introduced a new biochar-based technology that transforms buildings into carbon sinks during the 2025 Architecture Biennale. Applicable in cement, mortar, and concrete, this innovative solution can be used across all types of construction projects—from infrastructure to industrial and residential developments.
The first application of this technology was realized in a prototype housing unit designed to meet essential needs. Developed with an “incremental design” approach, the unit enables rapid and efficient construction while empowering individuals to complete their homes over time.
Holcim’s new biochar concrete mix incorporates 100% recycled aggregates and significantly reduces carbon emissions. Biochar is produced by converting organic matter into a charcoal-like form, which prevents the release of up to three kilograms of CO₂ for every kilogram used. When integrated into building materials, it offers an environmentally friendly solution without compromising performance.
The project will be showcased from May to November 2025 at the Time Space Existence exhibition in Venice and expands Holcim’s portfolio of sustainable building solutions, including ECOPact, ECOPlanet, and ECOCycle®.
