Medcem Cement Group, which operates the largest cement plant in Türkiye and Europe, has become the first company in 15 years to export cement to Syria via sea routes. As one of Türkiye’s leading cement producers, Medcem Cement has marked a significant milestone in the sector by successfully completing the first sea-borne cement shipment from Türkiye to Syria after 15 years. Holding the position as Türkiye’s top cement exporter, Medcem Cement Group has taken another major step toward its global expansion goals by entering the Syrian market.
Aiming to strengthen its presence in international markets within the cement and building materials sector, Medcem Cement continues to meet domestic demand in Türkiye while also increasing its access to new export regions as part of its sustainable growth strategy.
Commenting on this development, Medcem Cement Group CEO Mehmet Ali Ceylan stated:
“First of all, we are pleased that the prolonged civil war in Syria, which has negatively impacted countless lives, has come to an end. We also hope that the new administration to be established in the post-war period will contribute to the region’s long-term peace and stability. Our neighboring country has suffered significant infrastructural damage under the shadow of war for many years, and now, reconstruction efforts are essential. During this challenging process, we stand ready to fulfil our responsibility by supplying the necessary cement. As you know, following the devastating earthquake that struck our country two years ago, a large-scale investment process has been underway in 11 cities under the leadership of our government. Additionally, Türkiye has an ongoing demand for cement, driven by public infrastructure projects and private investments, particularly for urban transformation aimed at renewing the housing stock. In this context, our sector’s priority remains ensuring an adequate supply of cement to support the reconstruction and development of our country, especially in earthquake-affected areas. However, without disrupting domestic supply, our industry also possesses the production capacity and logistical infrastructure necessary to meet the expected cement demand for Syria’s reconstruction.”
