Medcem Çimento is implementing sustainable and low carbon emission projects that are friendly with nature in addition to the 230 million dollar capacity increase investment to be completed in 2023. Launching the Solar Power Plant project which will comprise of 22,500 thousand solar panels, Medcem Çimento aims to make a positive contribution to the ecology and minimize its carbon footprint.
Owning the largest cement plant in Turkey and Europe, Medcem Çimento disclosed its Solar Power Plant (SPP) investment with an installed capacity of 9.95 MW to the public. Having obtained the necessary permits and signed the agreements for the SPP investment, Medcem Çimento aims to take on a pioneering role in its sector to help Turkey achieve its climate change goal. With its environmentally friendly, sustainable and low carbon emission SPP investment project, Medcem Çimento is going to generate 20.3 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 12,000 households, by using nearly 22,500 solar panels on an area of 138,500 m².
A reduction in carbon emissions will be achieved as equivalent to 21,218 trees.
Release of 22,169 tons of carbon dioxide into our planet’s atmosphere will be prevented with the SPP investment which is a clean energy source. A carbon emission elimination rate equal to the one that approximately 21,218 red pine trees can do in a full lifetime circle will be achieved with this project which will make a great contribution to Turkey’s achievement of the zero-carbon goal.
Murat Kahya: “We aim to make a positive contribution to the ecology and minimize the carbon footprint”
Communicating the information about the project investment that will contribute to the protection of ecology, Medcem General Manager Murat Kahya said: “We are increasing the capacity of our existing plant in Mersin from 3.5 million tons of clinker production to 6.5 million tons per year with our investment of 230 million dollars, which we initiated in 2021 and to be completed in 2023. To provide a capacity increase of approximately 90%, Medcem Çimento will be among the manufacturers with the largest cement plant in the world with this new investment. As well as this goal, our projects aiming at the protection of the natural balance of both our country and our planet are ongoing concurrently. We are aware of the climate crisis our planet is facing. We rolled up our sleeves to make a positive contribution to the ecology of our world and we have started to invest in the first step of our green energy transformation projects that will significantly reduce our carbon footprint keeping the responsibility that comes with our awareness in mind. We aim to make a positive contribution to the ecology and minimize the carbon footprint with our Solar Power Plant project. We will generate 20.3 million kWh of electricity per annum on an area of 138,500 m², which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 12,000 households.
As the first one of our renewable energy investments, our SPP will start generating energy in October. We are still working on our additional SPP and wind power plant (WPP) investments. Our goal is to be the most environmentally friendly plant in our country, which supplies a major of its power needs from its own renewable energy sources.”
