As energy efficiency and environmental sustainability take on a critical role in the transformation of industry, Medcem Cement Group continues to take strategic steps in this transition. The company has commissioned a 10 MWh-capacity Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plant that converts waste heat generated during the cement production process into electricity. In this system, cyclopentane, known for its high efficiency, is used as the working fluid.
The ORC plant, an important investment in sustainability for the cement industry, transforms high temperature but low-pressure waste gases into electricity with maximum efficiency through the use of cyclopentane. With its low boiling point and strong thermodynamic properties, cyclopentane plays a critical role in Medcem’s energy recovery operations. The system, with an installed capacity of 9,540 kWh, has so far reached a peak electricity output of 10,300 kWh.

Instead of being positioned directly at the kiln outlet, Medcem’s ORC plant is installed at the electrofilter outlet. This strategic placement allows the use of gas purified from dust and particles, enhancing heat quality and improving energy conversion efficiency. Moreover, it extends the lifespan of system components and minimizes maintenance costs. The facility enables more reliable and continuous energy production through a stable temperature structure.
Strengthening Medcem’s vision for environmentally friendly production, the plant plays an active role in reducing Scope 2 carbon emissions, providing both economic and environmental benefits.
Despite offering high energy efficiency, cyclopentane is a flammable gas, and its use at Medcem Cement is supported by advanced safety procedures. The facility is equipped with 24/7 active gas detection systems, automatic alarm mechanisms, and continuous temperature and pressure monitoring infrastructure. All personnel receive regular training in chemical safety and emergency response.
Özer Ayder, Energy Manager of Medcem Cement Group, said “This investment is significant not only in terms of energy recovery but also in demonstrating the feasibility of innovative and safe energy solutions in the cement industry. We are proud to lead the sector with this high-performance model offered by ORC technology.”
