Has encouraged right and relevant use of concrete in view of its purpose of foundation since 1988, Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association (THBB) organized the fourth THBB Architecture Awards in 2016 for the purpose of awarding the habitable environments and examples of aesthetic buildings in the process of material selection and architectural production.
Organized in collaboration with Arkitera Architecture Center, THBB 2016 Architecture Awards consisted of a 3 stage evaluation process unlike the prior years and several other architectural awards in Turkey. THBB 2016 Architecture Awards received 57 applications produced in the past 5 years. In the process of the award where not only the the buildings and building groups with high use of concrete, but also engineering structures, interior space applications and outdoor arrangements, the Election Board consisting of Ömer Selçuk Baz, Hüseyin Bütüner and Hayriye Sözen subjected the applications to a preselection and selected 19 projects to be discussed in detail. Selected 19 projects were evaluated at the jury session that took the entire day. In the evaluation, each building’s own scale, program and challenges were considered and what was effective was the role of concrete in the building structure, quality of the design and application, consistent solutions created for the building’s own challenges and position and its relationships with the environment and context. As a result of this evaluation, Election Committee determined 6 projects as finalists among 19 semi- finalists. Visited on-site the projects that were determiend to be the finalists, namely Doğan Holding General Directorate Building (NSMH); Güngören Tozkoparan Secondary School (Uygur Architecture); Lüleburgaz Intercity Coach Station (Sıddık Güvendi, Tuna Han Koç, Barış Demir, Oya Eskin Güvendi); Şişhane Park Urban Square and Underground Parking (SANALarc); T – House (Onur Teke) and TAC-SEV New Campus (Erginoğlu & Çalışlar Architecture), the Election Committee decided on the project to win THBB 2016 Architecture Award. Elective Committee chose Uygur Architecture with its Güngören Tozkoparan Secondary School project as the winner.
To present the award, a ceremony was held in FMV Işık Schools in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, on January 4, 2017. Keynote speaker of the ceremony was Yavuz Işık, Board Chair of European Ready Mixed Concrete Organization (ERMCO) and THBB.
Stated that Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association carries out works in all issues for not only quality concrete production, but also development of the sector and that the association has always paid importance in safety, aesthetics
and environmental-friendliness in the construction sector, Yavuz Işık recorded that as an indicator of such importance, they contributed to the development of the sector by organizing Nokta Environmental Awards and Blue Helmet Work Safety Awards in order to support and encourage the leading companies and producers in the sector as well as the other components.
Yavuz Işık added as follows: “One of the objectives of our association is to emphasize the right use of concrete. For this purpose, as an Association, we pay a particular importance to THBB Architecture Awards that encourages aesthetical use of concrete as a material which is considered to be one of the most important topics of our sector.
