The second term of the Building Design Competition, organized by the Cement Industry Employers’ Union (ÇEİS) to increase the aesthetic and innovative use of cement, has come to an end. This year, a total of 96 projects in the student and professional categories applied to the competition, which aims to function idle areas under the theme of “Innovative Approaches in Urban Areas”. As a result of the evaluations of the jury members, 14 projects were deemed worthy of awards, and the projects were awarded with a total of 295 thousand TL.
In the Building Design Competition, which centered on the theme of “Innovative Approaches in the Urban Area” in its second term, buildings that remained idle or that did not have a usage character were redesigned in a way that would increase the spatial quality of their location and give them an identity in the urban environment. The evaluation criteria also included an environmentally friendly approach and the potential for the designs to be transformed according to their needs throughout their life cycle.
Projects awarded in two categories
The winners of the competition, in which 96 applications were examined, 41 in the professional category and 55 in the student category, were announced. In the professional category, where a total of 205 thousand TL prizes were awarded, the winner was the Ekoton project, prepared by the duo of Dilara Demiralp and Uğur İmamoğlu, which stands out with the relationship between the single structures located on the seaside, with the ground and with each other. The second prize went to the Concrete Jungle project of Aslı Erdem, Merve Nur Başer and Fatma Zeyneb Önsiper, which has the potential to provide habitats for different organisms and to contain nature. The third prize in the category went to the Tema project by Efecan Kuyusuz, Volkan Kaya, Metin Ali Liman, Mustafa Tayyip Kaynar and Bayram Altındağ, which focuses on re-functioning the idle water towers. The third prize in the category went to the project of Mertcan Demirhan, Umut Can Korkmaz, Emil Aliyev and Yusuf Çoşan, named Sarnıç, which was appreciated for its effort to raise awareness with its design in which concrete stands out. “We will support the implementation of the winning projects”
Expressing their satisfaction with their contribution to the visibility of the creative aspect of the sector, ÇEİS Chairman of the Board Suat Çalbıyık said: “We are living another moment that is a source of pride for our sector. We have completed the second period of our Building Design Competition, which has great effort and valuable work behind it, under the theme of ‘Innovative Approaches in the Urban Area’. In 2019, when we started this competition, our biggest goal was to reveal the creative potential of our country and to increase the innovative uses of cement. In this context, we gathered students, professionals and our industry around a goal. This year, we set out with the motto “Let’s Use Our Idle Spaces in Cities Together”. 96 projects, each more valuable than the other and prepared with great effort, applied to our competition. Our jury deemed 14 projects worthy of awards after their meticulous evaluations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teams who applied, especially the award winners, and everyone who shared their experience with our Building Design Contest.”
Underlining that they will also take responsibility for the realization of the projects that are deemed worthy of the award, Çalbıyık concluded his words as follows: “Our new task is to ensure that the projects that are awarded the prize are implemented. We have significant experience and method knowledge in this regard. The Green Concrete project, which won the third prize in the professional category in the first competition we organized in 2019 with the theme of ‘Innovative Steps in the Public Domain’, was realized at the Headquarters of our Union and the Youth Center located within the borders of Mardin Yeşilli Municipality. In order to implement different projects, we support the wishes of our municipalities to bring together innovative works with city stakeholders. We look forward to bringing the winning projects of this year together with our citizens in the appropriate regions of our cities by collaborating with public institutions. As ÇEİS, we are ready to do our part during the implementation process”.
