Floods and submerge of roads as a result of the extremely rainy weather experienced in Istanbul in recent days in a row bring the infrastructure problem of the city to the public agenda once again.  With the accumulation of rain water in a certain area with the rainfall and the lack of flowing places, the ‘Pervious Concrete’ application, which may be the solution to this issue, has been drawing attention. Experts speaking on TV on this issue suggest ‘Pervious Concrete’ can reduce the destructive effect of this problem.

Ismail Bulut, TÇMB CEO, who makes statements on TV on the concerning subject, suggests pervious concrete has serious environmental advantages. “We need three basic elements for human life. These are water, air and soil. In fact, we touch upon all three thanks to this application. In metropolises of developed countries in the world, pervious concrete and rain garden application are used together to bring rainwater to underground sources. Our Ministry of Environment and Urbanization encourages the pervious concrete by issuing the technical specifications and implementation guide of this application”, explains Bulut.

“Pervious Concrete is a special concrete technology designed to allow the water to go through it. This type of concrete helps maintain the natural water cycle by absorbing 50 to 200 litres of water per square meter per minute. Pervious concrete is produced from the same material as normal concrete but the only difference is that pervious concrete does not contain fine sand. Thanks to its hollow structure, it can pass rainwater. In this first example applied in the central campus of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, water is stored and given to the rain garden thanks to the impervious layer formed under the concrete. In the same way, we can suggest this system can be applied easily in Public Gardens all around our country. Thus, irrigation costs can be reduced. Pervious concrete application is also used in Denizli Metropolitan Municipality”, explains Prof. Dr. Ismail Ozgur Yaman during a live program on TV.

This concrete you see is a specially designed concrete. Pervious concrete is a type of concrete that allows rainwater or clean water to meet groundwater. The water accumulated on asphalt roads unfortunately causes floods as we see more and more frequently in cities. Pervious Concrete, on the other hand, allows the water to reach underground without creating any ponding”, says Academic Dr. Can Baran Aktas.
