ABB
ABB is a leading global technology company operating in more than 100 countries with about 135,000 employees. It maintains its activities under four different sections. These sections are also divided into other business lines according to certain sectors and product categories. OHS management is of vital importance for such a big and dynamic organization in order to maintain compliance with laws and prevent accidents. To this end, OHS teams consisting of people who are very qualified in both global and local regulations have been working in coordination with each other. The global teams prepare and publish general procedures suiting the organizational structure while the local teams deal with local procedures and directives in accordance with the local regulations. Either global procedures or local regulations are asked to be followed based on which of the two is stricter. ABB, which clearly shares its OHS policy with all of its employees, embraced occupational safety as its main priority and underlines this in all platforms.
The division OHS executives coordinate OHS and environmental activities and these activities are then standardized with the country HSE Manager.
Our goal is to make sure that our activities have no impact on the environment and that OHS regulations are constantly followed. We carry out periodic internal audits to achieve this goal. These audits also help when it comes to “benchmarking.” ABB not only plans its own activities but also plans the subcontractor and supplier activities based on customer interactions. Subcontractors and suppliers are evaluated within the Supplier Sustainability Development Program before they are chosen as ABB suppliers. Under this program, they are subject to independent third party audits including the SA8000 social responsibility standard. All incidents and potential dangers are reported at ABB. As for its hiring process, only candidates matching the ABB corporate culture are hired. ABB also pays attention to change management. For example, the process can only be carried out within the information of the OHS department or other related units and it cannot be completed without receiving these departments’ opinion or approval. OHS performance is followed in accordance with division goals in the global area and employees decide on their personal goals according to the division goals.
