The Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association (THBB), which has been working for more than 35 years to produce concrete in accordance with the standards in Turkey and to ensure correct concrete applications in construction, elected new Board of Directors and Audit Board Members at its 36th Ordinary General Assembly held on June 3, 2023. The new Board of Directors elected at the General Assembly held in Istanbul re-elected Yavuz Işık as the Board Chairman.

Evaluating the year 2022 in his speech, Yavuz Işık said, “In Turkish economy, which grew by 5.6% in 2022, while all sub-sectors grew, the only sector that declined was construction and shrank by 8.4%.”

In addition to urban transformation, mental transformation is also required

Yavuz Işık referred to the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquake disaster on February 6, and said, “Individuals, society and the state have a duty in this regard. ‘Structural transformation’, which is constantly emphasized in terms of economic management and is the most important key to sustainability, has become even more critical for the construction sector. Making the existing building stock earthquake-resistant and implementing earthquake-oriented regulations in all construction activities requires not only urban transformation but also ‘mental transformation’. In the aftermath of the earthquake disaster, urban transformation should continue to be a priority for the entire sector and policy makers. With the election process behind us, as the Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association, we would like to express once again the necessity of redesigning the construction sector, if necessary, through a general consensus by the new economic administration.”

In 2023, the construction sector will return to its former glory days

Continuing his speech by evaluating the economic developments, Yavuz Işık said, “If the power of economic institutions is increased, traditional policies are implemented, domestic and foreign investors and savers have confidence in the Turkish economy, I think that all segments may face some difficulties in the beginning, but then it will be all good.”

Stating that despite the decline in housing sales figures, construction sector players believe that 2023 will be positive for the sector, Yavuz Işık added, “The figure of 85 thousand houses sold in April remains low compared to the same month of 2022 and 2021. Sales figures in the January-April period are also 20% below last year. In this case, we believe that especially urban transformation and the low-interest housing financing model will be the determinant of developments in the construction sector. In fact, in the first quarter figures for 2023, which were announced during the week, the construction sector posted a 5.1% increase, the highest first quarter growth rate in the last 5 years. A growth rate above 4% in Turkiye as a whole is a significant performance for the construction sector. I hope that after the necessary measures and regulations to be taken for the healthy development of the construction sector in our country, the construction sector will return to its former glory days in 2023.”

Turkiye is the leader in ready-mixed concrete production in Europe

Giving information about the Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association and its activities, Yavuz Işık stated that they prepare a Ready Mixed Concrete Sector Report every year and said, “Our sector makes a great contribution to the construction sector and accordingly to the national economy with its turnover exceeding 36 billion Turkish liras, employment volume exceeding 37 thousand and annual production of 105 million cubic meters according to the official data of 2021. Our sector, which is the most fundamental branch of the construction industry, maintains its leadership in Europe with this production volume.”

Construction sector will meet at BETON 2023

Noting that they have been organizing Congresses and Fairs since 1995, Yavuz Işık said, “Our Association has carried out many events to share new developments in concrete and to bring together companies that provide raw materials, equipment and services to our sector with our sector. We have started working on the BETON 2023 Congress and Fair, which we will organize in Istanbul in November. We decided to organize the BETON 2023 Congress in honor of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Taşdemir, the esteemed teacher of our industry. We invite our researchers, industry members and all our friends who provide services and materials to our industry to participate in BETON 2023, organized in the 100th anniversary of our Republic, and to follow the latest developments.”

We launched our “Rapid Scanning” study to examine structures non destructively

Noting that they continue to provide R&D and technology consultancy services to the sector with the Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association Concrete Research Development and Consultancy Center, which they established with the support of Istanbul Development Agency (İSTKA), Yavuz Işık said, “Our laboratory, where we conduct all tests and provide calibration services related to concrete and its components, serves important projects in our country and abroad with its expanding capacity. In 2022, 6,500 concrete crushing tests, physical, mechanical and chemical tests for 1,037 samples and 3,529 calibration services were performed in our laboratory.”

Giving information about the Earthquake Performance Analysis service, Yavuz Işık said, “After the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, we faced intense demand from our citizens who wanted to learn about the earthquake resistance of their buildings. For this reason, we expanded our team and launched the ‘Rapid Scanning’ study, which includes non-destructive methods in the examination of structures as an alternative to our Earthquake Performance Analysis.”

We will continue to contribute to our country aiming to reduce carbon emissions

Touching on the issues that will be on the agenda of the ready-mixed concrete sector, Yavuz Işık said, “Turkiye’s National Contribution Declaration was announced at the United Nations Climate Change conference held in Egypt in 2022. In 2030, we will continue to contribute as a sector to this goal of our country, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 41% compared to the base scenario.”

New Board of Directors and Audit Board Members were elected at the General Assembly. Yavuz Işık was re-elected as the Board Chairman, Halit İnci as the Vice Chairman and Cemalettin Danış as the Accountant Member in the distribution of duties made at the Board of Directors meeting held after the General Assembly. In the distribution of duties made by the Audit Board, Ali Ergölen was elected as the Chairman of the Audit Board.
