KÜB (Additive Manufacturers Association) made an assessment on the recent earthquake and stated that the threat of earthquake-induced destruction is always up-to-date and that the use of concrete additives that increase the durability of the structures and extend their service life is vital.
In the statement made by the Association, it is stated that when the Earthquake Hazard Map of Turkey is examined, it is observed that the majority of the population are still living in the high-risk areas and noted that the last earthquake in the Aegean regions caused damages which are impossible to compensate. When the results of the destructions happened in the last 20 years starting with the 17 August earthquake in Turkey are examined, it is seen that important factors such as irregular construction, uncontrolled buildings, use of non-standard concrete and poor quality in building materials, unsuitable structures, static defects and corrosion come to the fore and it was underlined that construction should be carried out with knowledge, experience and technology.
The rest of the explanation is as follows: “Although the phenomenon of earthquakes is a fact that we have to live together, our knowledge, experience and technology enable us not to be desperate and to produce scientific solutions. Innovative initiatives should be introduced by supporting the durable construction works of the sectors producing technology against earthquakes. Construction Chemicals is one of these sectors. High strength and durability, or in other words, high quality concrete can be achieved by using building chemicals.
There are two different stages in ensuring the earthquake safety of buildings. The first of these is the construction of new structures designed to be earthquake resistant. The fact that concrete is one of the most important materials that make up the structural system of the building makes it necessary to use concrete with high strength and durability. One of the most important factors determining the main character of concrete is chemical additives used in concrete. Additives play a very important role in increasing the building quality by making concretes much higher performance and durability. Again, thanks to the quality concrete produced by preventing the reinforcement corrosion with waterproof additives, it will be possible to build long-lasting and solid structures.
Failure to use or improper application of the quality materials defined in the project process in the construction of a structure designed in accordance with the regulations will result in the failure of the structures to show the anticipated behavior and receive heavy damage under the earthquake action. For this reason, the high quality of the materials to be used during the construction of the buildings is a very important factor.
In recent earthquakes, it is seen that the main problem before the necessity of designing and constructing new buildings in our country is earthquake safety of the existing building stock and healthy urban transformation. For this reason, starting from high-risk areas, renewal and strengthening projects should be implemented with public-private sector-NGO collaborations within a fast plan. There is no other possibility to prevent both the loss of life and the economic damage.
